It depends on who is wearing it. Some women are socialised into wearing makeup because they are made to feel less beautiful by so-called "beauty magazines", and therefore do not know the power of their own beauty "unmasked". Some women wear makeup like "war paint" and as "masks" so that they can feel more empowered. Some women enjoy decorating their faces, as many humans have done throughout history and throughout, different cultures, in bright lipstick (which Freud once commented was the equivalent of a "monkey's bottom" and therefore supported to arouse the male of the species, although I think Freud was a wanker myself) and "face-paint" to cover the "so- called" imperfections of the unadorned face. I also think, make-up and the use of it is an extremely gigantic money-making enterprise and therefore, anything that makes money, has to reinforce the idea that women are not beautiful without makeup. (Or else women wouldn't keep buying makeup!)
Once again, it depends on who is wearing the makeup and for what purpose. Sometimes makeup is just purely used as a theatrical prop or in theatre, performance to enhance the natural facial features of the performer.

At one time, long, long ago, it was a sign of station in life. But always thought the use enhanced and called attention to a woman's best features, hide tiny flaws and add to the attraction to men. Humans are the only critter I can think of that doesn't give the male all the color. A male cardinal is beautifully and richly colored red, while the female is more drab. Check out peacocks, the male is gorgeous, the female quite plain. So I guess we females have to make up for that! ha-ha?

To enhance your features and in some cases, hide blemishes. Makeup doesn't even have to look like you've applied it. A small line of eyeliner will make your eyes pop and a dab of lipstick and lipgloss will help your lips stand out....Maybe a touch of blush to give your cheeks that healthy, rosy glow and you can be good to go....Makeup is however not necessary. Plenty of people don't wear any...natural beauty is always a plus. It's nice to have some concealor every once in awhile to cover a blemish here and there or help smooth out the look of fine lines on your face. To each his own though. Have a good day!

well...I will tell you why I wear it...One morning my 21 year old client ( with a brain disorder that causes her to say everything she thinks) came in early for her appointment and said...
"Oh!! I have never seen you without your makeup you look terrible"...i said I was sorry and told her to come back at her appointed time which she did.
I said to her "how am I now."..She said "much better!...I didn't know you looked so bad."
That is why I wear Estee Lauder to even my tone and hide circles under the eyes also lipstick does wonders for every woman.

I would have to say that makeup is just to cover up those unwanted spots on your face.Or to just spice up the way you look..Make your face look more colorful . There really isn't one purpose for makeup everybody uses it for a different reason.

a mask. Everyone wears a mask for the outside world. Whether its the clothes we wear, the way we speak, or make-up. It is a way of protecting ourselves from other peoples harsh opinions.
or if you mean literally:
foundation- to cover blemishes and be a base for other make-up
lipstick/blusher- makes lips/cheeks redder as they are when you are aroused creating this illusion to attract a mate.
Mascara- make lashes longer and eyes look bigger.
eye shadow- to create shadow and highlights in order to make the eye sockets look deeper.
concealer- to reflect light onto dark areas like bags under eyes
or...
so basically to trick other people. (and yourself)

To hide what most women think is ugly, but really is just as gorgeous with out make up. I like a woman with a real face and not a fake face.

The purpose of make-up is to highlight specific features and to help conceal discoloration - making us look healthier and, as a result, more appealing to the opposite sex (at least on a subconcious level).
Make-up should never make you look like a different person, though.
