Hockey wasn't sidelined in India, it just never made it there, for a couple of very good reasons. Cricket is an older sport, and became well established during the British rule. Cricket is a more appropriate sport, given India's climate, than hockey will ever be. There are very few ice patches in India for kids to play hockey on. Hockey arenas are very expensive, both to build and to maintain. A cricket pitch is relatively easy and cheap to look after.
So given that hockey is foreign to the country, inappropriate for the needs of most of the population, and much too expensive for most people to play, there's really no mystery about why cricket remains so popular in India.
Even street hockey is almost impossible in India because the streets are so crowded.
