The Sun is essentially the center of the solar system because it is the most massive object in it, so gravity forces everything else to orbit it for all intents and purposes. However, the Sun not technically the center. The Sun and everything else in the Solar System orbits the center of mass of the entire system. Every object in the Solar System has an impact on the location of this point, but we can typically ignore the contributions of everything except the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn. The actual center of mass, called the barycenter, is highly variable. It is often inside of the Sun, though not at its center, and can move as far above the Sun's surface as the Sun's own radius.

Because every solar system has a sun in the middle. That's why it's called a solar system. "Solar" means "sun", so a celestial system without a sun is not a solar system.
But mainly because earth and the rest of the planets and debris around the sun are remnants of the formation of the sun.

Ummm...'Solar' is an adjective and means 'of the sun' (or 'of A sun', if we want to be picky). So, 'Solar system' means 'system of a sun.'
In other words, if all our planets, dwarf planets, asteroids and other lumps of rock were not orbiting around the Sun (because its mass and gravity are the greatest), then there there wouldn't be any system. Just the Sun..

All spherical bodies exert a force of attraction is direct pproportion to their respectie masses and in inverse proportion to the square of their distnces. in th esolar system it is the Sun whiah is the bigest sphericl body and there fore the smaller ones are attracted towars it . It is just like a pin you pick up with a horae shoe magnet . thepin will not be able to draw or pull up the magnet ,if hole the pin over th emagnet . But if you hold teh magnet above the pin , the pin is p[ulled up and lifeted up by the forceof atraction of the magnet . Just like that the smaller bodies though they have the force of attraction ,cannot move/pull the sun towars them because of the enormous size of the sun.So they get drawn toward the sun byits force of gravity.

Earth and the other planets are sailing through space in a straight line. The Sun is so massive that it bends space around itself and captures objects into orbits.
The Sun itself is also in orbit around the center of our spiraling galaxy, the milky way.

PS - I don't think the sun holds the moons in place, as it were. I think that is a factor of the individual planet's gravitational field. It is the planet that is caught in the Sun's gravity.
