My check engine light came on in my 94 camry. I believe that it may be the o2 sensor. I have been driving for a week with it on. Does it affect gas mileage?

Yes, very much so .. the fuel is supplied to the engine by modern electronic controls. the O2 sensor is one of the main sensors that regulate how much fuel is supplied. it regulates the unburnt fuel in the exaust system and the engine is either adjusted lean or rich in accordance to this sensor. so if the O2 sensor is not working it defaults to a standard ammount ( so the engine will still run) but will not adjust to driving conditions.

The check engine light doesn't mean your O2 sensor is bad. It can mean many things.

The O2 sensor does indeed affect gasoline mileage. Without the O2 sensor your car's computer doesn't know how much fuel to feed, and the car would get horrible gas mileage if it ran at all.

Since the check engine light isn't like the old days, you don't know if your oil pressure is low or it's just time for a tune up.

If you're going to drive around with that light on, be sure your fluid levels are all good.

Expect the car to run bad from time to time, it's programmed into the computer to do that so you'll get it into the dealer promptly.

Absolutely! The O2 sensor measures the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust and sends that information to the engine computer which in turn adjusts the fuel mixture. An incorrect reading can result in an overly rich mixture which can foul the plugs and cause poor performance and mileage.

Yes it does. The 02 sensor works with the fuel injection system to help adjust the air fuel mixture, and reduce polutants in the exhaust.

the phsyical o2 sensor doesn't affect mileage. That just tells you if everything is ok or not. If your having serious problems with the engine, then that would probably affect gas mileage.
