The person who invented the second car!

Drag racing, as we know it today, spawned out of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), who used to sanction timed runs on dry lake beds in California. I'm certain drag racing, in the form of street racing, was around long before that though.

Most of the early drag racing tracks were abandoned WWII air fields.

The story goes that in the 40's and 50's street racing in California was becoming so wide spread that it was dangerous to the people doing it and the public that guys like Wally Parks got together and moved them to dry lakes and flat places like that. The first real "dragstrip" was in Southern California on an abandoned airstrip. I could go on forever but this is a good start. You know its easier to get an answer like this by doing a web search on drag racing history.
