Sun has lost 1/2 of its mass.Force attraction will be half of what it was earlier. This is the direct consequence as per Newton's law of universal gravitation.(F=Gm1m2/d^2). Sun would not be capable of driving Earth around itself in the same orbit as earlier. It will be able to stabilize the earth in its orbit at a larger distance. Earth will be in a farther orbit. The temperatures on earth will drop. It is far too off Earth will be a frozen mass. The cosmic radiation or light mainly will reduce affecting plant life. That will in turn break the o2 and co2 cycle. earth will then be a cold planet like mars or Saturn. Life will be difficult since the temperatures are not conducive for life. In the extreme case it is also possible that Earth will get loose out of Sun's orbit and travel in a straight line as per Newton's first law. Same story will repeat as earlier until it enters the gravitation Field of some other star. If the conditions are right and temperatures as on Earth now life forms might appear or it will be a cold planet.

Well, assuming this could happen at once, it would become pretty cold on earth. The sun's gravitational pull on the earth will decreases and earth will most likely move further away from the sun. I don't think life as we know it would survive as everything will become frozen solid.

I'm guessing you believe in evolution?? The sun has not been around for 15 billion years...it's actually only been around for about 5-6 THOUSAND years, since God created it on the first ( i think) day...and I doubt it will be around for 15 Billion years, so we don't need to worry about it!!

It will actually become a RED GIANT first and by then the earth would have been destroyed by the enlarged sun.

Earth would become a frozen tundra with little support for any life. The planet would die out rather quickly.
