Black Sabbath is generally credited with originating the term

It is really difficult to distinguish who was the first true heavy metal band...Jimi Hendrix may have started it with his distorted guitar riffs, and then the 'heavy' metal came into fashion - ie - adding the drums, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, etc. it seems to be a toss up between four outstanding bands:
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly. The link below is quite interesting in describing the evolution of 'heavy' metal vs. hard rock.

...a hard rocker/heavy metal fan "as it happened".(although I was a little young to realize it all, being at least 10 years younger than most of the guys playing the stuff!).

I'm positive I heard Iron Butterfly more than a year or so before Zep...

I'd personally consider three bands to be the first "Heavy Metal" acts - Deep Purple, Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath.

Most people consider the origin of heavy metal to start with Black Sabbath, primarily becuse of their unprecendented "heavy" guitar sound of the time. Their first album was released in the U.S. in 1970. However many of their contemparies of that time can also be considered in the running; Uriah Heep, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, etc.

I would say Black Sabbath. Although Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly were making heavy sounds, I think the term came into wide usage regarding Ozzy and the boys. As for Zep, I would put them more into the Hard Rock category. Their music is too varied to be just HM.

Definitely Black Sabbath. Their guitarist Tony Iommi suffered damage to his fingertips in an industrial accident, and to make playing guitar easier he detuned his guitar from E to C#, created one of the hallmark sounds of heavy metal music.

Black Sabbath! They created heavy metal. If it wasn't for Ozzy there would be no metal.
