Some people (on both sides) are afraid of what they don't understand. So it comforts them to lash out at those who believe differently.

Good question and your "answer" was even better.
Why all the finger pointing and division? Because if we are busy fighting ourselves, and blinded by division, we cannot see what is going on everywhere else. We are being conquered from within without a single battle, tank, or missile being fired. We the people are tearing ourselves and this country apart by the seams because we are being played against each other by the bigger fish in the pond. Who are they?
THEY are the ones with the real power who want to keep that power, Congressmen, Senators, Reps, and everyone else in our "government". Why should they worry about us wanting to run our own country when they are doing it for us?

Hey, at least it's not 1861!
We are united by history, culture and common interests. To say the least.
Squabbling and (unfortunately) petty politics are part of living in a free country.
I try to vote and otherwise participate in the process, to make this a better society.
The world will think what they will of us. They can't all hate us that much, since they keep coming here by the millions, legally and otherwise. We just have to do our best, to defend ourselves and spread human rights.

Because that was the name when the group started, and most people are too stupid to realize that we've abandoned that concept. They just blame the other side for denying what is "obvious", which in reality means both sides are missing the point.
We would be the Divided States of America, if we didn't have a totalitarian federal government enforcing rules and holding the country together with bribery and economic force.
There is no true representation of the people any more. We have become a system where those with money and power get to make the rules, and those without either find loopholes to survive, or get trampled on.
Maybe it is time for God to just wipe everything from the face of the map by fire and start over. Because nobody seems to have any inclination to fix the problem, and things just keep getting worse.

The States are United in one Republic. It has nothing to do with politics. The point of politics is to stir devision so as to conquer.

Maybe you should have a point when you tell a story. It makes things so much more interesting for the reader.
