Iran had a primarily secular, progressive, tolerant government until 2004 or 2005. Then, based on the continued actions of US forces on both sides of Iran (Afghanistan and mainly Iraq), the Iranian people got rid of their peaceful government and elected a hard-liner who would stand up to US aggressions in the region.

The situation in Iran is entirely one the US created for/by itself.
