So I graduated from college last year and got a job straight out of school as an art director. Some of the new girls that are around my same age like to say I'm cocky and too selective. All of the seniors like me though and it's seems I've gained alot of respect in their eyes since I started, as they're always asking me for my input. The young women basically say I'm cocky because I make calls on a lot of issues that I shouldn't be involved in, I just feel if something could be working better we should change it, and I have no problem telling someone about it. Personally, I don't care what they think of me, but I worry, because they're the type that like to gossip and talk about everyone in the office, and all they seem to care about is protecting themselves, I try to keep out of inter office politics as much as possible, and I don't want them to try and pull me in and slander me to the VPs and senior directors. How should you deal with these types?

My two cents.

Nevermind them. Cocky? Selective? I've heard the same things... I figured finally it was because there are few people that are willing to expand, act, and make decisions outside of their little box called 'job description'

Getting noticed by the higher ups? Exactly the same reasons. Someone who takes charge and gets things done always sticks out. Keep going, keep moving forward - it will be hard to hear the ladies gossiping when you're on your 45th floor office suite.

(No ********* etc intended, just pure focused ambition)

Ahhhhh, the arrogance of youth :-)

You probably are cocky and too selective. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Your mistake is in not caring what people think of you at work. These are your coworkers and they can make or break you! So why not extend yourself a little bit and make nice to the staff. You can skip the gossip, but office politics could bury you if you step on the wrong toes.

Climbing the ladder is admirable. What you need to do is to make sure that you're not stepping on your co-workers to get to the top.

There's obviously some jealousy going on, and perhaps you could try to include your co-workers in the suggestions and improvements you're putting forth.

Keep in mind, that when promotions come up, senior management also looks at how you deal with your co-workers. If they hate you, management isn't going to give you a position that requires their respect for you.

Work on rising to the top, but remember that senior management admires teamwork most of all.
