my x-wife has made candles for years. The best way to preserve the candle is to of course cover it tightly, and keep in a dark cool place. This will also help with the wax keeping its color. Most candle bought at stores do not have the correct chemicals in them to stop discoloration.

Do not blow out the candle, instead put the lid on it and it will go out by itself within a few seconds. Afterwards you can trim the wick before each use, and if there is any soot residue on the candle, clean it off. I have many candles and all have lasted me months just by cleaning them and trimming the wick.

I always try to find a fragrant oil to put into the candle. It makes it smell stronger.

slightly skim some wax off the tops and just rub your hand gently on the sides. This will re-fresh them just like new

Don't like candles in the house, too easy to cause a fire.
