I live in Houston with my boyfriend. We're a young couple in our mid 20's and are currenty researching different Houston areas for our first home.
If money isn't an issue, then consider the Heights. It is a GREAT neighborhood just a few miles outside of downtown. The neighborhood is booming with new home construction. And the heart of the Heights has beautiful homes that date back to the 19th century. Homes can get pricey but it is well worth it. My boyfriend works downtown and we live on the edge of the Heights. We live in an apt now, but we love the area because of it's central location. It's close to everything!
Another great area to live is the Pearland or Sugarland area. It is about 15 miles south of downtown Houston but the commute isn't very pretty. Lately the real estate market has been on the rise in that area. Lots of Houstonians trying to get out of the city but still want to live close enough to work in the city. You can get a very nice brand new home there within the 150-200k range. The school district is top rated and there's PLENTY of GREAT eating and shopping!
If you'd like to know anything else about Houston, feel free to contact me.
Good luck with your home search and welcome to Houston!

The closer in to downtown that you live, the more demand there is for the property and the higher the prices are. If money isn't a problem, West University is a great area for families with children. Most of us commoners need to live in suburbia and commute. If that's your case, check out Sugar Land, Greatwood, Katy (great schools), and pray for cheaper gas prices!

The NW area of houston is a nice area. Hwy 290 and 1960 intersection or near there. The Cy-Fair ISD is a pretty decent school district as well. Hwy 6 and West Road. Copperfield, Aberdeen Green, Aberdeen Trails.

The Spring area is a good place to start, and Spring Independent school district is good also. I lived there for 18 years, born and raised my daughter and she absolutely loved it and was very sad when we moved. Spring, Kingwood or The Woodlands are GREAT places to live because you can take the toll road into work. Me and my husband both worked downtown so it worked out really good.
Hope you enjoy the city.
