As a big hockey fan I also find it disappointing about the lack of coverage of the sport in the media. I have only seen reports in the Mail and Telegraph, although there is an increasing amount of hockey being shown on Eurosport which televised most of the mens world cup in the last 2 weeks which can only be good for the game. I guess this is because it is a minority sport which can appear a bit difficult to understand to 1st time viewers and the game can often be a bit stop start which might also put some people of.
PS: Eurosport are televising the womens world cup from Spain starting next week.

Because in the US, field hockey is seen as a high school girls sport. Its really as simple as that. I palyed on a school team in Canada, and when I told people I played field hockey they all wanted to know if I wore the 'little skirt'. Little did they know that internationally, it is a men's sport. Places like the West Indies, India, Australia, England where the men play the sport, and it has some money attached to it, you get media coverage. In the US, the NBA/MLB/NFL/NASCAR have the media tied up almost year round and getting any other sport in is almost impossible (the NHL is one example, or the WNBA). The last reason....when was the last time the US won anything in the world to do with field hockey? US wins women's soccer.....soccer gets a popularity push.US wins miracle on ice, ice hockey gets a boost. Field hockey.....not a chance the US will win any time soon, so no boost.

I guess you need to define "Our Media"...
The high school district I attended in California did not have field hockey as a sport... so THAT is why we had no media coverage !! IS there a professional Field Hockey League or Association ?
Now television coverage of high school or college sports go where the MONEY is... and even with cable-channels there are only so many channels and hours in the day to televise sports. Though I'd be willing see a little of the "professional poker tournament" coverage replaced by field hockey.
Perhaps you should find a corporation to subsidize some cable coverage.
As to print media... shoot the pics and write the articles... submit them to your local paper (high school, college or city). If they don't publish... organize your field hockey friends and family into a boycott of that paper and it's advertisers !!
Good luck

As a hockey player for more than 30 years I agree there is not enough coverage but it must compete with football, tennis, basketball, horse-racing, athletics, baseball, soccer, motor sports and so on The coverage is just soccer style with high shots from a Central camera which may work for soccer but not hockey Hopefully the TV companies will learn this one day

Field Hockey is a great game and both women's and men's games are exciting to watch, unfortunately in the women's game ' there is to much violence and brawling. In its present state it would not be good to show this on television. The refs and officials must tighten up on this side of things and put bans on the perpetrator's. I never thought I would see the day when girls were fighting on the pitch. Wake up you refs more discipline and get the violence off the pitch. This is the one time I can truthfully say men are the ones behaving themselves. Lady Hockey players start to control your tempers and set a good example

because ice hockey is cooler??? no seriously, i have no idea, it's not much in the media in the netherlands either, while eraly it's not a bad game! but most people only like football/ soccer, and therefore the media will focus on the sport so that as much people as possible will watch and that's the most efiicient way for the media to make as much money as possible, and that's really all theyér interested in! i know it sucks, but that's just the way it is: al about money!
