The Texas Librarians Association has a list of books called the 2x2 books, they are appropriate for children ages 2 years through second grade, and the Web site has a list of activities for each book. More information on this program and the books that are in the program can be found at:

http://www.txla.org/groups/crt/2x2intro.htm

I've read "Sixteen Cows" from the 2003 list and it is definitely one of my favorite children's books. I've read a few others, and these seem to be really excellent selections and really keep children's attention, too.

Local libraries that participate in this program have a special insert on the front pages of the book that includes the activities from the Web site as well as additional reading comprehension questions. In addition to this list, you might ask your school or public library if they participate in any similar programs.

Kids like round robin make up stories. You start them, they take turns adding details.
