You have to always keep and earing in it. You can take it out over night but thats is about it.

I think it all depends on how long you have had the piercing. Honestly, I have had mine probably for like 9 years and I barely put one in. I really can't say the last time I put one in. Probably for the first couple of years don't go too long without poking an earring through, just to be safe.

keep an ear ring or plug in it.
