On the 80 GB put the jumper on pin #1, and on the second drive remove the jumper. For more information type the model into Google and click on the Seagate link, this will give you a picture so that you know you have it right the first time. Hope this helps. Oh, BTW why would you want to make the drive with the operating system the slave? You might want to consider making the new drive the slave and saving the headache of reinstalling and reactivating your OS on the new drive.

A) TURN OFF THE COMPUTER & UNPLUG IT

B) Ground yourself to the computer chasis, incase of static.

C) Open the case to the computer and get a flashlight onto the case, so you can see without problems.

1.)Get a ribbon cable for the hard drive that has 2 bands to plug in, besides where it plugs into the board. One at the end and one in the middle and then the one that plugs into the board.

2.) Set the second hard drive to "slave", by moving the jumper to the "slave" positoin which is either on the hard drive, or is on the manual.

3.) If your original drive came as the "only master drive", you need to move the jumper to "master", rather than the factory setting.

4.) Place the old drive at the very end of the ribbon cable, the new drive in the middle and hook the last end to the motherboard, in the #1 controller outlet.

5.) Plug all drives in, and turn on the computer. If the computer does not list a Master drive and a Slave drive, then you need to go into your bios settings by hitting "delete" or "F2" once it begins to reboot and reset the settings to "auto" so that the bios recognizes the new drive.

6.) Boot up and your new drive should be shown. Make certain that your boot order (in the bios) is for CDROM, then A, C, or then C, A.

7.) Insert your CD that came with the hard drive, and do a complete setup. Follow instructions.

Good luck. I really hope that this helps you out.

You could cable select. Or you could put the newer drive as the master (set jumper master) and the older drive as the slave (remove to set jumper slave). You probably have your system on the older drive so it may be best to transfer it to the newer drive also. Agree with above about the 40 gig as master but it may be slower so it might be better to transfer system to the 80 gig. I'd just buy a 200 gig and scrap the others if you can. :-) Good luck.

Tools Required-

1. Phillips Srewdriver (medium sized)
1. Flat head srewdriver (optional-comes in handy)
1. Antistatic mat or wriststrap.
*Important note, entering your computer without proper antistatic protection can cause harm and damage to YOUR COMPUTER. basically you can f*** up your your system RAM AND HARDDRIVE amoung other things if you don't discharge static electricity that can build up from friction on your clothes, etc.

Ok lets begin.
1-Firstly turn off the computer
2-using phillip screwdriver remove screws to the back of the computer that holds the side panel in place.
3-remove side panel ( some slide up, some slide back and some swing outwards)be observant and dont loose screws.
4-using hands remove the IDE cable(white or grey ribbon 40/80wire ribbon cable that is attached to the back of the harddrive) you may or maynot have to remove harddrive first. i recommend you do, it ll be easier. to do this look for the screws.

*note some computers use IDE 1 for both the harddrive and the cd/dvd roms. you may need to go to your local computer store and purchase an IDE cable. it comes in 40 wire and 80 wire <--recommended.

put the harddrive that has the operating system as the master on IDE1 do this using the jumpers located to the back drive.
(watch where the cables run from the drive to the motherboard it should be marked verysmall on the board as primary: IDE2 is secondary , to be visual it is the blue port with 40 metal pins in it on the motherboard with a white port next to it and it also has a small 34 pin slot for the floppy drive, Make sure the IDE cable you have /or need to get has two connectors on it so you can connect two devices on one cable.

with all this technical part out of the way, its simple

on the primary IDE (IDE1) : MASTER= HARDDRIVE WITH OS(operating system drive) --- SLAVE is going to be your CD/DVD ROM on IDE1 (same cable) (blue slot on motherboard)

on the secondary IDE (IDE2) : set the hard drive you want to add as MASTER and This goes on IDE 2 the Second cable (white or black slot on motherboard)

MAKE SURE TO PLUG IN THE POWER CONNECTOR FROM THE POWER SUPPLY TO ALL DRIVES. AND CONNECT THE IDE CABLES TO THE MOTHERBOARD DOUBLE CHECK JUMPERS.

do what i like to call--an open boot-- which is basically boot up the system with the case open, ensure that is starts up, by default bios is supposed to auto detect the drives, but if not enter bios. find the bios key--it can be del, esc, f2,f1 or a series of keys, it usually states which set. after this is go into setup and set your drives eg primary master/slave, secondary master/slave
if you have the option to set it to auto which is common in all
modern systems set it to auto and press enter on the selected section. when the systems starts up, go in my computer and ensure that the drives are being detected. if so shut down the computer close the case and secure it with the screws.

happy upgrading

Put the jumpers in cable select...
Then connect the 80GB hard disk to the end pin and 40GB hard disk to the middle pin....
Then go to bios n check if both the hard disks have been detected...
If not try again...
