I know how to combine like terms--it's simple.

I also know that the answer to this riddle is "keyboard."

What I don't know is what it's asking to do.... like, once i combine the like terms for each problem then what? How are the answers from the first column suppose to match the answers to the second column???

And why do they have the problems separated in parenthesis?

If you can do problem A so I can compare mine just to see if I'm doing it right too, that would be great.

Thanks.

Unfortuanately my keyboard doesn't do powers

you add all powers of x that are alike within the 2 brackets in the first column. Subtract all powers that are alike in the second bracket from those in the first bracket in the second column to give polynomial answers. You then compare the answers in the first column with answers in the second column

when you do this you get the following

A gives same answer as E, R as Y, K as D, and B as O.

You now have the anagram AERYKDBO

resorted it gives KEYBOARD which fits the riddle question.

the brackets are essential to the arithmetic since the plus sign applies to all items within the bracket which the plus sign precedes in the first column and the minus sign likewise to all items in the bracket in the second column

I can't do powers on my keyboard but i can illustrate with letters

A = [-9d -3c -7a] + [8d -5b +6a +4] where d is fourth power of x, c is 3rd power etc.

combining likes and using the plus factor between bracketed polynomials gives

= 1d -3c -5b -a +4
Using the same substitution of letters for powers you will get the same answer for E in the second column.

It is saying that some of the answers to the addition problems are equal to the answers of the subtraction problems.
example
The answer to K
(x^2 + 5x - 4) + (-3x^3 -x^2 + 2) =
-3x^3 +5x - 2
The answer to D
(2x^3 + 9x - 8) - (5x^3 + 4x - 6) =
2x^3 + 9x - 8 -5x^3 -4x +6 =
-3x^3 + 5x -2

Because they have the same answer, their letters will be used to solve the riddle.

Hint: Because you already know the answer is "Keyboard," you already know which problems to solve! Simply solve the problems that start with that letter, and notice how some of the answers will match each other.

What could have happened:
Because you already solved the riddle it took all the fun out of it. Had you not known, you would have needed to solve each equation and look for matches. Once found, you would have all the letters of "keyboard" and you would need to unscramble them.

A.
(-9x^4 - 3x^3 - 7x) + (8x^4 - 5x^2 + 6x + 4)
-9x^4 - 3x^3 - 7x + 8x^4 - 5x^2 + 6x + 4

5x^3 - 3x^2 - 7x - 5

K = D
R = Y
B = O
A = E

Now that you know which sum equal which different, take those letters that have matching values and mix them up to answer the riddle, which as you guess

KEYBOARD

A suits E. the clarification there are parentheses is by way of the fact the 2d set of words in E will all grow to be opposite (positives grow to be damaging) via fact there's a damaging examine in front of those parentheses, so which you will desire to word that damaging sign to each thing interior the parentheses. combine like words and simplify each and each subject and you will discover suits for purely the letters interior the be conscious keyboard.
