I left him, so I don't know if abandonment would apply. Also, I have very little money, and all the lawyers I contacted, even legal aid, want at least a couple hundred dollars

You don't need his location. File on the grounds of abandonment.

If you need child support or alimony, you may need to hire a detective to locate his physical whereabouts. If not, I believe a lawyer can process a complaint on your behalf and if he does not answer it, he will "default" and a judge may enter a Judgment of Divorce. Your attorney will have to attempt to serve the complaint on him at his last known address, maybe he will even provide you will a PO box number and cooperate with you. If you get his signature on the acceptance of service and then fails to show up for court or file any response, you can generally get a judge to dissolve the marriage. Also, an adult member of his family can be served the Complaint. A competent process server, i.e. sheriff's office can effectuate service. If you are seeking asset distribution, it may be a little more sticky. This is generally what you can expect in New Jersey, but rules vary among states. You should visit an attorney and get advice. Good luck!

You can still divorce him even if you can't find him. I'm assuming you have an attorney. Possibly get his parents address and the papers can be sent there. An attorney can answer all this for you, but my sister went through this years ago and didn't have ANY idea where he was. I believe papers were sent to his parents. So, see an attorney, it's possible.

In California, you can divorce him in absentia. Check with the Clerk of the Court in your town. Also, see if the Bar Association in your area will hook you up with an attorney who will meet with you once at no charge. You can ask the question of the attorney, and possibly retain him to do the divorce.

Track his computer, or hire a Private Investigator. Every computer has a number, that 's how the govt can locate everyone.
