About 3/4 1 inch. If it is too short, water will run down the facing causing it to rot sooner. If it is too long, the singles will droop making them look bad.

the shingle should overhang the metal drip edge by about a half inch. I have seen some roofers leave as much as 1 inch and as little as 3/8 inch.

You can put it even with the edge. It looks nicer and you have a clean look. My husband is a roofer and he has been doing that for years and there has never been a problem.
