I'm departing for Sydney in June-July next year?

Start by taking that red bus city tour. It shows you a days' worth of everything. You can get on and off as many times as you want to visit places in detail and then get back to move to the next.

Make sure you get an all inclusive transit pass. You can use it to go anywhere without worrying about parking or directions and to take the ferries all over the harbor to beaches and the zoo.
We have usually rented cars when we travel but this strategy eliminated that step while giving us complete freedom to go everywhere in Sydney.

Taronga Zoo, Opera house, harbour bridge, Darling Harbour, Manly beach, Cronalla (you've got to go there, soo beautiful). You can go to Jamberoo water park (it's a 2 hour drive from Sydney) and Blue Mountain (a must go, 4 hours drive from Sydney).
