It is about becoming self aware of the "why" we do things and the motivation behind it in a neutral/safe atmosphere. We MUST be true to our own selves in order to be able to assess our life situations, make corrections, and learn to cope.

Most of the time when we enter counseling it is because we need to work out issue which have appeared in our life and we do not understand WHY we are doing and acting the way we are behaving.

Honesty, without excuse, with yourself is self awareness to the extreme. Only in the face of pure honesty can we find the answers to what troubles our mind.

Self-awareness helps the counselor assess how they might be feeling during the session and how those feelings may affect how the situation is handled. By being self-aware the counselor can check what they say and how they respond to what the client does or says. Thus improving the overall outcomes.

Because you have to be able to face up to and take responsibility for your actions when trying to achieve resolution in this sort of interaction. You need to be able to apply whatever your counsellor is talking about to your own situation and actively participate in the process.
