The book is easy enough to read and not that long. READ it, and stop relying on summaries for your source. That is a VERY bad habit, and it will not stand by you for long. Taking quizzes, tests, and having discussions on the book will easily demonstrate you have not read it. Further, you will be learning very little. Get a life and do your work!!

The protagonist, Nick Charles, is a classic private eye. Very tough, not very talkative, occasionally secretive, but otherwise totally honest and direct. Although surrounded by liars, he generally says exactly what he thinks in as few words as possible, and lets people react however they will. And he is a fine early example of the "reluctant participant" character; he is a retired detective, has no interest in taking on the case, and in fact never officially does take it on. He would much rather do nothing at all (with the possible exception of drinking), but events beyond his control eventually force him to become involved.
