the charge light does not come on in the instrument panel, is it supposed to, and the altenator starts to charge when first started (apprx 1-2 min) but then stops

Put your keys in the car an turn it to the "on" position, but DO NOT start the car. You charge light should come on to indicate to you that the bulb has not burned out. If you do not see the charge light, then the bulb for the charge light may have burned out or you may have some bad wiring.

If you alternator stops charging, the charge light should be on to indicate a problem with the charging system.
