Hi, I'm trying to find a job in the IT industry now. I have been out of school since 2002 (I have a BS in Computer Information Systems from Devry University). I was told that when I go on interviews I should always mention that I am interested in taking refresher courses in the subject. Especially if I am interviewing for a position that requires a specific skill set which I dont know too much about. Do employers appreciate your interest in taking these types of courses or do they look down to it?

I'm not a professional but my opinion is that I do think that employers appreciate the mention. Especially in IT, things change from day to day. If you don't keep up with the times, an employer would have no use for you.

By taking classes you're showing them that you have initiative to make yourself better and in return, making their company better as well.

So yes, do mention that if you don't have any hands on experience in a certain department that you'd like to have training to help them help you.

Hope this helps and good luck in your future job interviews!

Employers always love to hear that. It means that you are interesting in learning more, therefore becoming more valuable to their company. Even if they pay for it, they don't think you are just getting the job to pay for college. I wouldn't really bring it up, but if they ask if you know a specific thing, just say that you don't, but have been "looking into" taking classes on that subject. Watch your wording when you talk about it.
