When I open msconfig and select the startup tab, I noticed a unnamed program running. I mean...it's completely blank. Nothing under "startup item" and nothing under "command".

Any idea of what it could be?

Go to http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1 and download spybot search and destroy. After you install it and open it the first time, on the left hand side of the screen, you will notice a tab called tools. Open it and there are more tabs. Open system startup. There will be a list of the programs in your startup list. Click on the blank program and a description will show what it is. If it is malware, you can erase it right from the program.

There are two ways to approach this problem:

1) it's a leech that has attached itself to the harddrive. It can only be removed by fire. I would suggest that you remove the harddrive from the rest of your computer before you burn it so as to salvage the motherboard, etc.
2) do as the other folks said--run virus/spyware scans

It could be a virus or spyware, I would suggest that you remove it and then run some spyware/virus scans. If you need ideas on which applications, let me know.

Hope this helps!
