Causes of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas doesn't make enough or any of the hormone insulin, or when the insulin produced doesn't work effectively. In diabetes, this causes the level of glucose in the blood to be too high.

In Type 1 diabetes the cells in the pancreas that make insulin are destroyed, causing a severe lack of insulin. This is thought to be the result of the body attacking and destroying its own cells in the pancreas - known as an autoimmune reaction.

It's not clear why this happens, but a number of explanations and possible triggers of this reaction have been proposed. These include:

infection with a specific virus or bacteria;
exposure to food-borne chemical toxins; and
exposure as a very young infant to cow's milk, where an as yet unidentified component of this triggers the autoimmune reaction in the body.
However, these are only hypotheses and are by no means proven causes.

Type 2 diabetes is believed to develop when:

the receptors on cells in the body that normally respond to the action of insulin fail to be stimulated by it - this is known as insulin resistance. In response to this more insulin may be produced, and this over-production exhausts the insulin-manufacturing cells in the pancreas;
there is simply insufficient insulin available; and
the insulin that is available may be abnormal and therefore doesn't work properly.
The following risk factors increase the chances of someone developing Type 2 diabetes:

Increasing age;
obesity; and
physical inactivity.
Rarer causes of diabetes include:

Certain medicines;
pregnancy (gestational diabetes); and
any illness or disease that damages the pancreas and affects its ability to produce insulin e.g. pancreatitis.

Diabetis can defnaitely be prevented.... There is not age limit to prevent it.... Follow these simple but effective steps...

Studies show that making certain choices in our regular food can significantly reduce the suger levels The first factor to be understood is that food containing more fiber is a better choice. For example, whole wheat, broken wheat are better choices than noodles and pasta. In whole wheat the skin is difficult to digest and since the body has to work harder to digest it the blood sugar levels will come down. Similarly, whole wheat bread is better.

Bakery products are mostly made of flour and lots of butter. These products are very dangerous for those suffering from diabetes. Whole wheat bread is permitted and two Marie biscuits may be eaten at tea time. Do not exceed two biscuits. All other biscuits have too much fat.

Among vegetables those with more fiber and less starch must be chose. All greens are good, cabbage, cauliflower, ladies finger, beans, bitter gourd, ridge gourd and peas are better choices than potato, colocassia, yam, tapioca and beet root. Radish, a little carrot and pumpkin may be eaten. It is important that at both lunch and dinner a diabetic must try to eat one or two cups raw salad with tomato, cucumber, onion, cabbage, lettuce, etc. These are full of fiber and if eaten with a meal, help to reduce the intake of rice and cooked food and also reduce the blood sugar.

Among fruits the only safe fruits for a diabetic are orange, apple, pear and pomegranate. These have a high fiber content. One may be eaten at 11 am and another at 6 pm. All kinds of banana are dangerous since they are high in sugar content. One apple or orange is 50 calories. While one banana is 100-120 calories. Also Banana, mango, jackfruit and custard apple are fruits which are pulpy, with less fiber and so they make the blood sugar shoot up suddenly and must be avoided if sugar levels are high.

Milk and curds may be consumed but use only milk which has been thoroughly skimmed (cream removed).

Fish and chicken from fish or chicken curry may be eaten but without the gravy. The gravy is fatty and bad for diabetics. Dietary control and wise food choices is the secret to managing diabetes.

Diabetes is caused by your body's inability to process sugar. It is NOT just a sedentary lifestyle or overeating (I know a woman who is 5'9" and weighs about 130 and nearly died in a diabetic coma!) A sedentary lifestyle and overeating DOES, however, make it worse, and if continued, can kill. Exercise helps a lot. Also, reducing the amount of carbs you take in, within reason. A no carb diet is bad, as is a diet with too many carbs. Check out the glycemic index (you can look it up on the web) and you will find that eating reasonable amounts of low gi food will help your body process the glucose.

Being diabetic---the body is not respond properly to insulin, making it difficult for your cells to get sugar from the blood to make energy,---being called insulin resistant. Also the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin. My son is type 1.....and already he has some serious health problems due to this disease. He has neuropathy in both legs all the way to his thighs, and that causes him some serious pain. He also has it in his stomach....part of his stomach is paralyzed and now he is waiting for surgery to have a device put in his stomach so that he is able to digest his food. He has been unable to gain weight for the past 6 years......he is 6'2" and weighs just 155..... He is only 27 yrs old.! Type 2 runs in my family. It isn't just because of weight, but yes there are ways that you can live with it. You need to be straight with your doctor and see a nutritionist. Eat regular and healthy food and exercise. No matter what type you really need to listen to the doctors and get support from professionals and family. And though many think that you can't have sugar you have to watch the carbs.

there r 2 types of diabs.type i and type 2.to an extent yes....but sometimes no..its bcos the type u have.if its due 2 complete insullin shortage as in type 1...u cant prevent...its natural....there is no age limit i have heard till now.i have also heard that it can be hereditary.------exercise a lot and also eat healthy.even if u eat a lot no problem,check that u exercise.this helps as a protective cover against many age-based diseases&others.eating sweets,candies has nothing to do with diab.u can eat a lot..but be careful to exercise.in type 2 there is insulin prodctn but is inadequate...this probably occurs due to irregular eating habits tension etc which u can avoid, u know.where as in type 1 there is hardly any prodctn& is out of a man's control.

I'm not sure if there is a cure for diabetes yet. I do know that soda and candy are big contributers to the disease. There are different types of diabetes. One is inherited and the other one is developed over time. If you think you have diabetes, call your doctor to have he/she do some tests. Better to catch it early. Hope this helps.

It has two types, insipidus and mellitus which one are you asking of? They are characterised by excessive urination,taste and weight loss. Their causes are idiopatic but have predisposing factors such as hereditary,excessive smoking ,alcohol.Obesity,diseases of the pancreas,liver,brain and kidney failure.Production of premature insulin and insuffiencent insulin by the pancreas.
Prevention:weight control,Restriction of alchohol,smoking,eating of balance diet ,moderate excercise,prompt treatment of any urinary tract infection and periodic medical check. It can occur in all ages but more in middle age and elderlies.
