When a lawyer goes to a settlement hearing, he/she is negotiating with the person or entity you have sued because the other party wants to try and settle the case out of court for less money than the amount you sued for. Bear in mind that your lawyer cannot accept a settlement offer on your behalf without checking with you first, so if the lawyer comes back and says "Well, you sued for $1 million and they're offering $100,000" you don't have to accept it. That's up to you, but the lawyer will probably tell you what your chances are of getting more money if the case goes to court. In some cases it's better to settle, but your lawyer will advise you fully on that.

A settlement for what? Are you suing your company and now the attorney is going to a settlement conference to discuss ending litigation?

Settlement may or may not be the best thing for your case, it depends on a lot of factors.

Sarge927 is correct.

The settlement talks, whether negotiation or mediation, are just a way to come up with possible resolutions or agreements regarding the dispute. There is no requirement that you accept any proposed settlement agreement, and your lawyer cannot accept one without your approval.

no a settlement is not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it is not worth litigating any more and a settlement is a better way to resolve the situation
