This cannot be done! You must get the correct password!

The guy that sold you the PC has set up an administrator account, and then a user account. With the user account, you can not make any changes. I am guessing this is XP. Try starting the PC, then Log Off. At the Log On screen you should be given a choice of signing in as Admin or User. Try the Admin and leave the password blank. If it will not allow a blank password try using Admin. If this does not help, go to ElderGeek.com and research the password issue there. In a worse case scenario, you may have to re-install Windows. Hopefully you got the CD's with the system. If not, I would recommend going to Pricewatch.com and look for an alternative. I have also seen programs on eBay for password recovery, but have never had the need to purchase or test them to see if they really do work. A last resort may be to press F8 and try to reset the passwords while running Windows in the safe mode. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Hope this helps. And yes, it can be done!

if the computer askes for password press ctrl+alt+del+del a black screen will appear give user name as administrator and leave the password blank. The window will open in administrator. Click on start there will be written administrator on top click it. It may show some images cancel them click on delete account delete the account which doesn't let u install any program. Again open administartor clcik on make an account make a new account and use that one. If this doesn't happen then ur $200 dollors are gone then try and complaint police or take help of others....

Usually when you log into Windows it has a place where you can choose Administrator (or owner) or guest. Sounds like they had the guest profile blocked from being able to download anything (very common especially with kids). I would first reboot the hard drive using the recover disks. This will erase anything they previous owner may have on it and restore the computer to the way it was when new. This should solve the problem. If you don't have the disks Try clicking on Owner or Admin. when logging in. Otherwise go to control panel, then Users and try to fix it.

Firstly, if you think the computer might be stolen - be a good samaritan and TELL THE POLICE! If nobody claims the stupid thing then it's yours anyway. But if this gets traced back to you - YOU are legally liable also. As for the rest of your question - buying a used computer is really not a smart thing to do. Get a new one - it's much easier and you know that everything will most likely work. You are going to have to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS (which I doubt you recieved the disks for).

You can first start by trying to go to Control Panel, then User Accounts and then check to see if you can see an Administrator account. If there is one, check to see if there is a password protect on it. If there isn't, restart your computer and keep hitting the F8 button until you get a black screen that gives you the options to start in safe mode. Once in safe mode (by clicking yes) click on Administrator and then again, go to Control Panel, then User Accounts and create a new account (your name if you'd like) and this time make sure to select Administrative rights and then restart the computer once more and then click on your new username.

This should work, if not, let me know and I'll try to help you as much as I can. Hope this helps!

Get the restore disks can install from SCRATCH. This time, pay close attention to every detail when setting it up. If you are using passwords, write that down.

A new installation won't suffer from crap that was left behind.

The sureshot answer to this problem is to boot from a windows installation cd, choose new install, format the hard disk, and install new windows. For detail instructions see entry of windows reinstallation in the blog
