Have you tried using a DeviceMaster RTS? It connects ethernet to serial, but does not manipulate the serial data at all, just takes the serial data and wraps them into an Ethernet package for transport. Cost effective and works well also.

There are some laptops out there that still offer a true serial port, but they are few and far between. I know that Dell offers the d810 model, which does include a serial port - at least the last time I checked?

Here's a helpful link for you - http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/products/needhelp/en/compare_notebooks?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~ck=mn&~tab=5

You are going to have a real tough time. The chart in the previous answer was pretty good, but it looks like they have reconfigured some of those models (like the M90)and they don't have it now. I could not find a single one that still has it and it is still for sale. That port is big to put into a laptop and the USB adapters usually work, so no one is putting them in now.

You might try calling the manufactures and getting a sales person on the phone. They have the ability to do searches that are not on-line and they probably have been asked before.

You might also get with the equipment vendor and see if they know a way around it. They are setting these things up all the time so they have surely run into the problem at some point. They may know an adapter that does work.

You might need to use a desktop.
