I don't have a middle name either and it's nice to know I'm not the only "freak" out there. Most people don't believe I don't have one. ???
I don't think it's pompous to have two or even three. It's personal preference. Of the parents because the person carrying the name doesn't really have a choice. Different religions or ethnic groups have certain protocols on that sort of thing, too.

I don't think its pompous just a tradition. When I had my kids baptized, my in-laws liked a certain "father" and since we were in their town I consented to have it done by him. Well, it turned out that my kids needed that second middle name and we couldn't come up with one on the spot so we gave them the first name of the "father". They never use it and it only shows up on their baptism papers. I think the hyphenated last names are more pompous.

I wonder if some people have 2 middle names because the parents wanted to honor 2 family members. Of course, you don't have to USE the middle names...
You could call yourself John A.B. Smith. Or just John Smith, which is my preference.

If I gave my child two middle names it would be because I could not make a choice cause all the names are what the child is

2 middle names is no where near as bad as Spanish naming traditions. What I think is weird is people who never use their first name and go by their middle name. Are they hiding something?

I have two middle names. My second middle name is my mother's maiden name. It's to show the connection to my mom's family and to acknowledge my mother. Most of the people I know have 2 middle names and the 2nd name is their mom's maiden name as well.

My brother has two middle names, because they couldn't decide on which one, and then realized if they kept both his initials spelled his first name! So it does not always have to do with religion!!
