This could be a nuymber of things. Since it disappears I'd say it's a program that you are running that updates itself on the internet.

Most commonly your anti-virus software.
Otherwise it could be windows update - if youa re set to do autoupdates.

I am not likely to agree that this is a bad thing. If it were, you'd have other problems. (If it were a virus - you'd see viral related problems; if it was spyware - you'd see ad popups - that don't go away, etc.)

You can try to find out what it is by closing programs that are running to see if it goes away - although closing your anti-virus may not be such a good thing.

You can also get a program such as Hijack This! that will tell you what programs are running on your computer, and where they are called from.

It's a virus/spyware/adware.

Browse through Yahoo Answers at any time of day or night and you'll see several recent questions similar to this one. Viruses are a very common problem with Windows PCs. So common that it should make you wonder why you keep your PC. Why don't you own a computer that doesn't have these problems? Don't be a masochist, switch!

Switch now and in a month or two you'll be wondering why you didn't switch sooner. Everything is easier on a Mac, and there are NO viruses. That's right: ZERO. I can't remember the last time I scanned for one (AV scanners are available for the Mac, but they only look for PC viruses!) and my system is as good today as the day I bought it.

Perhaps it is your anti-virus signature definition files updating. Most A-Vs will update new definitions daily.

Try this, go into your A-V program and set it for manual updates, wait a day and see if the popup stops.

Then be sure and turn your updates back to automatic. You need them for your computer to be protected!

Good luck.

What anti-virus and anti-spyware do you have?

Get Zonealarm - it'll stop it from going through until you OK it... that way you'll be able to see what it is.

It's a program updating itself, but which one? Hard to say.

Please, please, PLEASE don't use Internet Explorer (the blue e) - it's big, slow, insecure and hasn't been seriously worked on in well over 5 years.
How much has the internet and computers changed in 5 years?
A lot.

Firefox is much more up to date, sleek, fast, more secure, blocks pop-ups, it's free, incredibly customizable...

Download Spybot and Ad-Aware (freeware available at downloads.com). Run these programs and they will likely identify and clean up the culprit. Suggest you do it ASAP as you do not know what the malicious software is actually doing at this point.
