i know that sounds dumb and childish, but seriously, what's the point? it's just another piece of clothing that needs to be washed. i could understand if you are a woman and menustrating, but other than that..why? i know lot's of men don't wear boxers or briefs, what about any women? i don't wear underwear if i am at home in my lounge pants. is it "gross" to go out in public without any--who is going to know? is it society that makes us wear underwear, or is there a real health issue about not wearing it?
this isn't a question created for stupidity. i want some honest, intelligent answers...but i can understand if some of you want to be jerks and reply back with a mean remark. those will be reported!
thanks for listening to my monday morning rambling. :-)

Same reason there is a hallmark card for every holiday... so more money can be made...

On the other hand, it's probably just a hand me down from the days where going out in public without undergarments was taboo. It's time to live in the now. I'm with you, no more undewear!

I think this is a really thought provoking question... shoot half the time when home alone I just wear my boxers so does that really count as underwear at that point, but I digress. The one really nice thing about wearing underwear is the prevention of certain sensitive areas from getting caught in zippers and I would say that some clothes allow for "going commando" while others do not, certainly you would want underwear on if you are in tight clothes that are going to chafe as they provide a cotton protective layer and help remove some of the sweat from that area. During winter times they are an extra layer of insulation.

Well those were just some thoughts on why we wear or don't wear underwear... maybe more people will answer seriously with their thoughts and a common consensus can be acheived.

Underwear, as I understand it, is a byproduct of the evolution of clothing. For instance, if I were to go without undergarments in my blue jeans, the zipper abrasion would eventually become uncomfortable. Not all cloths are like that, however. If you were to go back 50 or 60 years, you would find that underwear usually included some type of undershirt for a man. This is also because shirts of old were itchy, the thread used for sewing the buttons was more abrasive to the skin, and it just made wearing the fashion of the day more comfortable.

I expect as clothing gets more comfortable and better made as the years go by that traditional underwear may disappear much like the undershirt has all but disappeared from regular use.

Two reasons, I guess.

One is that traditionally, most people may not have washed their clothes every day. They'd wash underwear more often, which extends the life of the outer' clothes.

Frankly, with a lot of clothes now that's still a good idea. If i'm wearing a suit, its dry-clean only, and dry-cleaning is actually pretty hard on the fabric. So you wear a fresh shirt/underwear every day, and only clean the pants when they need it.

Second, not all fabrics feel that good.

If you're wearing lounge pants, I don't see a problem.

Well, first of all it is not a silly question. Thank you for asking it.

It is actually healthier not to wear the underwear, especially for man. Research has shown that our sex organs stay almost 95% without freedom and free access to air, and that the male genitels are always hugged up by the underwear which induces the higher temperature from the body, which is not good for the male sex. Some men are not having babies because of this.

As for the females, I dont know if it is un healthy to put the underwear on or not, but it is certainly healthy not to put them on.

Even if you go out to the public, no one is gonna know that you are not wearing your underwear, infact, you will feel much lively as you feel the free air circulation

Underwear is a holdover from the victorian times. Lots of cultures around the world do not were underwear-exception is when women are having their periods.
As for those who say you can't tell when someone is not:
certainly girls with prominent nipples are easily outed when they go bra-less; also guys are usually quite noticable in their pants if they are just hanging loose. Loose clothes, maybe not that apparent.

I think underwear is a hold over from when outer clothing was not very comfortable. If you have ever worn a raw wool sweater or shirt with nothing between it and you you'll know what I mean. I think that nowadays it's just a marketing thing.

But I guess if my pants ever caught fire and I had to pull them off quickly, I would be saved great embarrasment.

I'm guessing it's a legacy item of apparel left over from the days when most clothing was made out of rough cloth. Maybe it was pretty hard to produce clothing that was soft enough to put over one's genitals, so they would rather use rougher cloth for the rest of the body. Also, back in the day, people did more manual labor, farming, etc and couldn't wear the same kinds of clothes we wear today.

In addition to keeping outer garments from soiling, undergarments are worn for a variety of reasons: warmth, comfort and hygiene being the most common. Undergarments are often used for modesty or erotic display; sometimes both of these motivations are simultaneously present.

Undergarments can also have religious significance, as in the special temple garment worn by followers of the LDS Church (Mormons). Some Jews use clothing that should neither touch the skin, nor be used as outer clothing: tallit katan or tallet ketannah or tzitzit

Well. for one thing. woman have discharge in that area and you don't want it getting on your clothes! Secondly, people don't wipe themselves properly (i mean like washing with soap and water to get rid of the poop in their butts) then I think you should wear under ware. Cause you don't want E.coli all over your regular clothes or for that matter jeans and pants...i think it's unhygienic!

I think if you take a shower at night before you go to bed then it's fine to sleep naked.Otherwise it's not! yuk!
