They are helpful in maintaining the balance the mother needs to provide nurishment to the child and herself while carrying the child. It is best to take them immediately after finding out you are pregnant. There is a good brand called natures choice that is very easy on the stomache. The best time to take them is at night before bed with a glass of milk. Congradulations !!!!

Prenatal vitamins serve as a supplement to help give the body a sufficient amount of nutrients. They are NOT a replacement for your diet. It is suggested that a woman take the vitamins before she becomes pregnant, while trying to conceive. The vitamins decrease the chance of birth defects.

Start taking them when you decide to start trying or at least a few months ahead of time. Or as soon as you know you are pregnant. These vitamins will help prevent birth defects.

DO NOT TAKE THE VITAMIN WITH MILK!!! It interferes with the iron and zinc absorption see below:
"If you're relying on your supplement for extra iron, you'll probably want to take it between meals so more will get absorbed. Taking extra iron may cause constipation, so drink a lot of water throughout the day. Another thing to consider is that caffeine hinders iron and calcium absorption, so avoid having tea and coffee before or after you take your pill. Taking your pills with milk isn't a great idea either because it interferes with iron and zinc absorption. Juice or water are best."
I recommend taking them in the morning after breakfast with a glass of orange juice. I know the above statement recommends between meals, but that is not what the directions on my prescription says. It tells me to take it in the morning with food. This seems to work best for me. When I tried taking it with just water I burped up the pill all day long (no pleasant). This does not happen as long as I take it with orange juice.

You should start taking them as soon as you start trying to have a baby, that way they are already in your system when you conceive. They give the needed nutrients for both mom and baby. For instance folic acid help protect the baby against neuro-tube defects such as spinabifida. There is calcium which is needed for mom since your body will take it away from your bones and give it the baby if you don't have enough.

I started taking them as soon as my husband and I decided we wanted to get pregnant. I took them for 5 months before becoming pregnant, all through my pregnancy and for the hwole time that I was breastfeeding.
I also took a lipil supplement caled Expecta Lipil that aids in brain growth and development in the baby
