It sounds like either your disc is dirty or the laser that reads the disc is. Try a new disc that you know is clean and if that does not work than use a can of compressed air to clean out your DVD Drive. If neither of those ideas work, than you have a hardware problem and most likely the DVD Recorder is almost dead.

I've had this problem!
I used a dvd cleaning disc to clean the lens didnt work so i shoved vacuum hose over the vents and sucked out dust!
Sometimes it cant read certain discs.
Are you trying to play downloaded discs?
There's 3 different formats for dvdr discs and your dvd recorde might not support certain discs you are trying to use.
