There are 3. A regular ball mouse... An Optical Mouse... And what is called a TrackBall mouse... The TrackBall is a mouse that sits in one spot and you just move the little ball around with your thumb or fingers depending on the style... An Optical mouse just works better than a Ball Mouse... And a ball Mouse is just standard...

Well all "mice" are the same internally...the only difference is the way they connect to your computer. There is PS2 and USB. There used to be a serial connection for the mouse, but no one uses that anymore.
