To the exception of the Irish,-who immigrated because of the potato crisis and the English oppression-who were the best of their nation ,the rest were the poorest ,most uneducated ,having trouble with the law and opportunistic people of every part of Europe ,looking for a better life.
And most of them did great.

Many reasons:
From Ireland, starvation and having their homes taken from them by the British
From Germany, Austria, and France, civil strife
Also the opportunities in USA
Basically the same reasons that immigrants come today: opression and economic hardship.
These immigrants were received in the same spirit they are received today - they were hated by many, and abused by those who had the opportunity of abusing them.
However they brought prosperity to the nation in the long run, just as present day immigrants will eventually do.

Opportunity and troubles at home.
First, there was a lot of feeling that the 'new world' was a promised land. This belief was encouraged by shipping companies and land developers in the Americas, who wanted customers, workers, and/or population. For example, I live in central Texas, which has a large German descended population. When Texas was 'forming' they wanted more Anglos, so they literally advertised in Germany for people to emigrate.
Also, there was a lot of upheaval in Europe. Wars, persecution, and famine. People on the 'bottom', who suffer them most from these events, felt they would be better in America.

Because there were not many people in USA so there was empty space land and other resources for many people .There was a chance for achieving dreams .Some people got there and became rich .Built up their own businesses .So they built the base of the America , now you are living on it.Look around and see that America is a good place due to many disadvantages .You can find everything there .Many students from different countries wants to come to America to study at better conditions and see cool places girls , fast exotic cars and many things new opportunities .

For many, there were more job opportunity in the States. The Irish were plagued by the famine. Italians, Germans and even Austrians were faced with economical crisis that was worsten by WW1 which plummed them to even more political instability. To them the grass seemed greener on the other side.

Poverty was a big reason.
For instance, many immigrants from Italy came in the late 1800s & early 1900s with essentially nothing except the willingness to work & the memory of the abysmal poverty they had left behind.

Europe was a pretty crummy place to be back then. Politically, economically, religiously.
