I had a mean doctor when I little. Then we moved when I was almost 16. My parents made to go an older man peditrician. I was mortified to go to him.I did not like an older man seeing me naked at that age. I also had a mean denist as a child, he told me he was going to take a look at my baby teeth, then popped one out!!!! UGH!
Recently, I turned down a job because I would have to have a physical. The company told me I had to have a drug test, no problem I understand that. But when I got to the clinic to give the urine sample, they told me I had to have a COMPLETE physical. I called the person who offered me the job, told him I did not appreciate the surprise physical from a strange doctor, and that I had changed my mind about the job. Not sure what they mean by a COMPLETE physical...but I did not stick around to find out. I accepted another job 2 days later, no physical

I'm glad you asked this question because I have "White Coat Syndrome" myself. A result of bad experiences with doctors and medications. I won't go into those details.

The Internal Medicine doctor I am with now calls me in a prescription for valium before each of my visits, which helps to take the edge off. My anxiety level would drive my blood pressure up to 240/190 (ideal is 130/80). I am 47 y/o and he is the first doctor who diagnosed me with "White Coat Syndrome." We already know I have High Blood Pressure and Diabetes-Type 2 so I *have to* go to the doctor at least every 3 months to keep those diseases under control.

Like someone already suggested, ask your friends who they see and get recommendations. Ask specifically about bedside manner and personality. Schedule a "Consultation Visit" with a new doctor to basically interview him/her which will help you decide which doctor you want to see again. (This is how I chose the Internal Medicine doctor I'm with now.) With each consultation the nurse will take your weight and vitals (BP & pulse), then when the doctor arrives let him/her know you are just interested in visiting with him/her about your health care, be sure to let them know you have had fearful experiences with doctors in the past. You want to watch the doctor's manner. Examples: What is your impression of the waiting area? Do you like the nurse? Is the doctor patient with you; Are they willing to take time with you (i.e. is their hand on the door?), Is he/she compassionate/understanding? Do you feel relaxed with the doctor? -- things like that. Then it's just a matter of choosing which doctor you feel most at ease with. You may also want to do the same process in choosing a GYN for female issues, unless the MD or GP you choose is a female.

Here is a link to "The Complete Physical Examination": http://www.mtmonthly.com/studentcorner/cpe.htm -- most employer physicals do not include the genital exam or stool sample. Employer physicals are more basic.

Best of luck to you.

You need to realize that not all doctors out there are like these doctors. They are there to help people. And it's a good thing.

You may want to start by thoroughly researching a doctor before you go. I understand that the physical one was short notice, but ask around. Ask family and friends. See who they go to. Talk to people. It really does help get a feel for who the doctor is.

Realize that you are a human being with natural genetics and should not be ashamed of a doctor or professional looking at your body. They look at hundreds of bodies a year and won't think anything of it or different of you. Usually they are short on time anyways and will spend the least amount of time they can on you. They have also gone through years and years of schooling and dealt with many many patients. don't think so much about your visit before you go or anticipate anything bad happening becasue it will be done in over with in a half hour and you will go on about your life, but staying in check so you are healthy

Everybody fears from a particular things when facing it for the first time. But people are brave enough to be cautious in the second time. In short, an experience makes the person fearless.

You can start getting over your fear of doctors by taking comfort in knowing that NOT all doctors are the same. Most are friendly, but business like.
