I love who I am,and where I'm from...
stereotyping is crazy...
every one is not barefoot and toothless, dirty and have 20 kids running around...some of us are educated(imagine that!)
besides our food kicks a.s.s !
I would never want to leave Texas for anything in the world...
we are such a warm and friendly state where cowboys still hold the door for you...and I watch my neighbor's house when they are away...
My question is why do people dislike southerners?

I think it's because we talk slower than most people. Talking slowly=retarded in many peoples' books.

You're right--I'm from GA and southern food DOES kick @ss. I just made a pot of fresh snap beans with some fat back in it last night, as a matter of fact. :)

I've been to Texas a few times, and I just can't get over how OPEN it is. I was in Dallas, and you could stand at the park and the sky just seems to never end. I don't know how else to explain it. It's just very blue and very expansive!

Yes, there is a lot of stereotyping involved in the whole Southerner/Yankee thing. It goes both ways in my experience. I'm a Yankee and so can address the whys from that direction anyway. Personally, I don't buy into the stereotype, though I do have my problems with Southern Baptists - but that's another question :). I'm 50 years old and my generation remembers the whole desegregation issue pretty well. We watched, most of us children at the time, Southerners march with placards boasting Bible scripture and touting racism at the same time. That left a lasting negative impression that remains to this day for many people, which they associate with ignorance.

I have a son who is 21 and he goes to school further south and has developed a disturbing aversion to what he calls "southern rednecks." He was raised in a household that rejected racism and intolerance and that is why I find it disturbing. I have questioned him a few times about it and he mostly just grumbles but has mentioned gay bashing and yes, jokes about interbreeding (and has never seen Deliverance), and obviously thinks those he puts into this category to be ignorant and uneducated for the most part. He hates to be reminded that his paternal grandfather was born and raised in Alabama. I think he's meeting intolerance with his own intolerance and stereotyping and I think our last conversation may make him start to question that, but he's young and has a lot of learning left to accomplish.

Hey Girl! Sorry if I offened you or any other southeners. I was the one who asked the 'talk funny~no shoes question. The reason I asked that question was because I recently traveled north for vacation, and I met some very rude people from the north. I was born and raised in Arkansas, and I am very proud to be southern. These people were acting shocked I even wore shoes, and were asking me questions like- What is the capitol of New Orleans? I just wondered if everyone not from the south thinks the same of us. They really hurt my feelings so believe me I meant no harm, I know how it feels to be judged just by where I'm from. I hope you understand now why i asked that.

I am from California where many people are from other country's. They are not American blood so they don't really care for us or love us. (There are mainly Mexicans in CA) I found out that many people are rude to American people and our heritage or ancestors because of a jealous hate or lack of love for our blood line.

It's sad that or own, mainly white, American people develop a stereotype against our own southern and mid-western people (including myself). I believe it is a bias from the Illuminates N.W.O controlled media to infiltrate, divide and conquer our country.

I never saw so many stupid **** kicking Hicks in my life till I moved out to Phoenix AZ then to Dallas when I was 21. (KEEP READING) Keep in mind I was a surfer kid from Huntington Beach CA so I also was caught up in these stereotypical views from the media of my beautiful American people.

I have to admit that I was wrong about Hicks. I realized that the woman are very beautiful & inteligent. The men become men at 18, still opened doors, have respect for woman and enough decency to pop a guy in the mouth if he gets outa line with him or if he's rude to a lady. People still say Sir, Mam, excuse me, pardon me, thank you, I love you, you're welcome, I care about my country and God bless America.....and they mean it!

Don't pay any attention to people who hate you. Just remember your right to carry a gun and protect yourself from them. And by the looks of you...God sure blessed Texas. Southerners rock as do all God fearing American people. I love you all.

I personally think their just jealous, I was raised in West Va, moved to Texas about 5 years ago. I feel that there is more stereo typing going on in W.V. I didn't realize that it existed here to be honest. People always make fun of West Va, saying they are barefoot and pregnant...etc. I pay no attention to the comments there's always one in every crowd.

Yankees think we are inherently stupid because of years of "inbreeding" (the inbreeding part was only depicted in films like "Deliverence" and "Wrong Turn").
