According to legend. He faced his son Mordred in the Battle of Camlann. The two knights battled and inflicted fatal wounds on each other at the same time, Arthur receiving an ax blow to the head.
On his last moments he asked Lancelot to throw the sword Excalibur into the lake. He didn't do it and when Arthur asked him 'what did you see?' Lancelot said 'nothing, the sword just sunk'. Arthur knew it wasn't true, he got angry with him, called him a liar and had to ask him twice again before Lancelot finally obeyed and the hand of the lady of the lake surfaced to grab the magic sword taking it back with her.
The remains of King Arthur were put on a boat that sailed to the magical island of Avalon where he was healed and waits to return as king of England in a future time of great need for him.

According to the legend, he was killed in hand-to-hand combat with his son, Mordred. Mordred was his son by his sister, Morgan le Faye. He had "lain" with her before he realized he was Uther's son, and that she was his sister. Mordred had found Guinevere and Lancelot in bed together, the myth says, so he declared Arthur to be unfit to rule, since he had turned a blind eye to it, and he tried to take over as king. When they met in battle, they stabbed each other at the same time, and both died. Legend has it that Arthur's body was carried away to Avalon, the Isle of Apples. He went on a barge, attended by three queens. He is said to be only sleeping, not really dead, and will arise and become king again in England's greatest time of need.

Well, according to stories written about King Arthur, one would assume that when his round table was filled with 50 knights - the full amount of knights the table could take, and due to the reason that his wife was having a presumed affair with the 50th knight - Sir Lancelot, his kingdom began to fall apart. King Arthur was heart broken and in distress. Leaders of neigbouring countries were waiting for a chance to take over the city of Camelot against the powerful king and this was the moment. War started, and I would think that King Arthur went to war with a heavy heart as one of his own men betrayed his trust, even though all his knights, Lancelot included, went to war with him. He died in battle - succumbing to fatal wounds to critical points on his body, esp the heart. His mystical sword, Excalibur, could not protect him from death as he was not 100% at the thought of living either.
well hope this answers a bit of your question. go watch the movie called "Merlin" if you want, it gives a darker edge to how King Arthur lived and died.

He died while fighting his son Mordred.
Arthur drove a spear through Mordred after he dropped Excalibur and it's scabbard which makes him immortal. Then Mordred managed to make a final devastating blow to the King.
Arthur, dying, told Guinevere (I think) to return Excalibur and the scabbard to the Lady of The Lake.
