Both cars are FWD, use the same tranny and both had an option of the ubiquitous GM 3800 engine.

Without a doubt, any engine taken from a 2001 Monte will fit into a 98.

Physically, - yes. Of course - if the cars both have front wheel drive, - (or rear wheel drive). Now if there is a size difference, you will have to change engine mounts, and possibly modify exhaust system hookup. Unfortunately my Chilton manuals end with 93", so i don't know exact specifics, - so this is a generalized answer! GM uses same basic engine blocks for quite a few years, - just changing sensors manifolds (intake, fuel systems, and exhaust) and the like to make it "nerer version"!

Now we move to computerized cars! You may have to change some sensors (or eliminate some) so that everything matches up with the older system.

If they are the same kind of engine then yes it will fit and you won't have to change the motor mounts. If it's a different kind of engine (i.e., one is a 350 and the other is a 327) then you might have to switch the mounts. Buut generally motors are interchangeable within models.

The easy way to find out is to call a junk yard and ask. They have a set of cross reference books that tells what will work with what, and they would tell you, if you were nice about it! Good Luck!
