Las Vegas is fun when you're there, but you drive by a lot of nothing to get there! Tahoe is pretty, but it's pretty far away, too. Not a mini road trip, in my book.
Take the 8 freeway east from San Diego. Between San Diego and Imperial Counties you go through a windy, rocky mountain range which is kind of fun. Stop at the store by the side of the road in Dateland and get date milkshakes to refresh yourselves. Around Gila Bend you'll see the Phoenix bypass route, take it and you'll avoid some desert travel and some of the big city traffic.
Head north on I-17, it won't be too long before you're out of the desert and can see sweeping geography all around you. Take the side road to Sedona and you'll get to drive up through Oak Creek Canyon--in winter the road can be slippery! Spend the night in Flagstaff. If you're tired of sitting, go up to Buffalo park--an exersize trail right next to the city, at the foot of the mountain with a view for miles
The next day drive north on 89, you'll be going around to the other side of the mountains and hitting the Grand Canyon from the back way. There are other side canyons all around. When you're on the Navajo Reservation there are places where they've built ramadas and people come there to sell jewelry they've made. You can talk to the Indians who actually made things (don't be surprised if they talk on cell phones and have websites on their business cards) and you'll get it for a better price than you get at the concessions in town or at the National Park.
When you get to the entrance to the park buy a yearly pass for $50. You can park and take a shuttle along a lot of the length of the park--it makes stops so you can get out and walk awhile then get back on to go to the next stop. Then go back and walk through all the shops. When you're worn out head out of the park. There's an Imax in Grand Canyon Village with a great program on the canyon--you feel like you're in a helicopter riding right along the river! There a lots of eating places there and its just a couple of hours ride back to your hotel room in Flagstaff.
The next days use your national park pass and go to Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Tuzigoot, Montezuma's Castle, Monument Valley, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert. Also there are dinosaur tracks around Tuba City. There are lots of lakes in the area if you like to fish or just like to walk around them. Meteor Crater is interesting, but it's private land, not national park so you'll have to pay there.
If you want a different route home, go west on I -40. It isn't in the Grand Canyon but you can see Grand Canyon Caverns around Seligman.
The freeway takes you to San Bernardino (you could still zip off for that trip to Vegas), and then couple hours drive you'll be back home.

If you want fun and all night partying then go to Vegas, if your looking for something a little different and quite with beautiful sceneries then go to grand canyon. There you take tours and can go on donkey rides or river rafting, eat native american foods like navajo taco, then if you really wanna go swimming you can go to page which is not that far from grand canyon, over there is a lake called lake powell, then after go visit Monument Valley utah, and mesa verde where you can see some big anaszi ruins, watch the sun go down with out all that smog u get in big cities. Plus you'll meet a lot of native americans, don't worry we don't bite, well at least i don't bite, but it'll be fun, here at Monument valley they have tours where you baha through sand dunes, ride horses, hiking tours and also atv tours.
Anyway what ever you choose just have fun cause that's what taking a trip is all about.

Lucky you live in San Diego...but uh, I'd say to Lake Tahoe. It's absolutely gorgeous and if it's hot outside, well there ya go. I'd say Grand Canyon stands about equal, because it too is absolutely gorgeous. Vegas you should experience at least once in your life. It's cool just because of all the lights and activity, but otherwise it wreaks of nastiness. Instead of newspaper stands they have porn stands, with men reading them on the streets. Stick with natural beauty. It'll be more worth it. More fun stuff to do too.

Lake Tahoe has the best drive(scenic) and is the most serene.
Also the longest of the 3-trips.
Grand Canyon is the most stunning once you're there but pretty boring on the way there and back.
Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world.
(What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas)

Tahoe because you have the lake and the casinos all in one place. It's scenic, yet you can party. I find the Grand Canyon boring, personally and the drive totally sucks! Plus, you might be able to work in a night in Reno.
