You cannot defend the indefensible. The truth of the matter is that a portion of the Muslim community is willing to use violence when they feel Islam has been insulted. This shows an insecurity as if their position is so righteous they would not need to resort violence to silence verbal opposition.
However the sad fact of the matter is that the root of the dysfunction is in the text themselves. Yes, it takes a hard heart to carry out such offenses but when you grow up indoctrinated it takes a heart of gold to rise above such insanity. The text makes it all to easy for the fallible human aspect to falter.
I really don't know the end game solution to this problem but I do know that if we do not recognize where this dysfunction is coming from we can not treat the root cause of the manifesting symptoms.

You mean the Mujahideen Shura Council right? Absolutely nuts, but that's because they've done nothing but fight foreign armies bent on occupying there land for ohhh about 30 years now.
They are bad people - if you are interested in how they got this point, research the Mujahideen. It's quite interesting.

Unfortunately Islamic clerics are not answerable to the people unlike the Pope. Moreover the militant nature of Islam coerces the clerics to make such drastic statements.
Freedom of speech & thought however is endowed upon everyone. Hence we must bare with this sort of rhetoric.

The God of Muslims can not be the God of Christians and Jews because no God would say convert or be killed. The God of Muslims must therefore be Satan. Only he would approve of such a plan. I for one will die before I pray to anyone except the one true God and his son Jesus Christ.

There is no defending it...it's the rantings of lunatics.
It's sad, though, because it reflects poorly on ALL Muslims. Christianity and Judaism pre-date Islam, so Muslims are required to recognize them as valid religions. These guys aren't true Muslims...they're maniacs with a political agenda.

They really just need good oral sex and a glass of water and a good nights sleep. Their brains are shriveled up like raisins in the sun. When they went nuts and demanded the deaths of the cartoonists, it showed then to be intolerant killers. When the burned churches and killed nuns over being called violent and evil it showed they are not only intolerant killers but hypocrites as well.
