I had a baby 6 weeks ago. My dr. wants to prescribe birth control but I do not know what kind to get. She suggested an IUD or the pill but I do not know which is better. I just know I do not want to get pregnant again and I am too young to get my tubes tied.

So anyway, which is better the IUD or the Pill?

IUD will last you 5-7 years depending on the kind. You don't feel it and you don't have to do anything.

Pill ya gotta take every stinking day at the same time, and if you don't take it even at the same time every day the chance for failure gets higher.

I'd go with the IUD.

If you are looking for long term birth control such as 2-5 years I would say the IUD! I got one inserted about 1 1/2 weeks ago and so far I love it! For the first 4 days I had horrible cramping like period cramps but much worse and then they just stopped. With a new baby it sure is going to be hard to remember to take the pill everyday at the same time. With an IUD its completely worry free...no pill to remember no shot to get no patch to remove everyweek etc. I would say if you are married and are looking for something long term then the IUD would be the way to go.

Also if you plan to have another baby say 3 years down the road you can have the IUD removed and the pregnancy rate is the same as not having any kind of birth control at all! You have just as good of chance of getting pregnant the month after having it removed as you do as if you werent on any BC at all!

My personal preference would be an IUD because it lasts 5 or 10 years depending on which one you get. I was on the pill before I got pregnant and then my husband and I moved, waited several months before going back to the Dr to get my pill prescrip renewed and oooopppps, I got pregnant. Best mistake we ever made but the IUD would not cause this to happen again. Anyway, I am back on the pill because my health insurance will not cover the IUD and it costs $500! I know many women who use the IUD and they feel it's the BEST birth control out there.

All birth control have risks. It just depends on what your body can take. You will have to remember to take the pill everyday, and if you miss a day, you'll have to double up the next day, which isn't good. I don't know anything about the IUD, but I have never heard anything bad about it. The Depo-Provera shot is taken once every 12-13 weeks. I personally am on the Depo shot and I like it. Just research everything and choose what's best for you.

Condoms. IUD can cause many things from infections to problems with your period to deformed children if you do happen to get pregnant. Birth control pill is much safer except if you are breastfeeding. This will dry up you milk. Double up on condoms and spermaside or a spounge and wait until you are done breast feeding.
Type into your google search "dangers of IUD" You will see.
Do the same for the Pill. Good luck, I hope you find all your answers.

You gotta remember to take the pill everyday at the same time for it to be the most effective. The IUD is something you dont have to worry about.

Ask you doctor about the NuvaRing. You leave it in for 3 weeks and then take it out for 1 week. It has a lower dose of hormones and you placement of it doesn't effect how good it works. It might be something to think of.

Good luck.

Personally, I love the pill. As long as you take it faithfully, you won't get pregnant. With IUD's, you have to get minor surgery & it may slip out of place. The pill is so easy! I have a 2 year old & I don't want to get prgnant again either so I know how you feel! I reccommed the pill.

Good Luck! :)

They both have risks. With the pill it can cause ovarian cancer. The IUD can cause PID or ovarian cysts. I wouldn't take the chance with either of them if it were me, however it is a personal choice. They have changed the law with the age of getting your tubes tied too, you have to be 21 to do that now. I've had mine done for a year. I do have 3 kids though too. Good Luck.

It really depends on what your body and you can tolerate..I been taking birth control 9years and from my experience the pill-I will forget to take it everyday so when I had to double the dose it was to much on me. I would get really sick. I try about every kind of pill out in the market even the low doses. They all gave me some type of side effect. I finally switch to the shot which is taken every three months and for me it's been working out great. I don't have any side-effects. Good luck..
