How to Remove Mildew from Clothing:
Tips From eHow Users

From eHow's step-by-step instructions:

Mildew is mold - a living organism that thrives in warm, humid environments. If your clothes become mildewy, your best bet is to act right away. The longer it stays on the fabric, the more time mildew has to weaken or even rot your clothes.1. Take the mildewy clothing outside and brush off any loose mold growth. (You don't want those spores floating around your house.)

2. Leave fabric in the sun to dry out - heat and sun kill mildew.

3. Presoak remaining stains in cold water, then wash in hot water with detergent. Allow to dry in the sun.

4. If stains still persist, sponge the area with diluted chlorine bleach (use 2 tbsp. bleach to 1 qt. water). After about 10 minutes, rinse.

5. Launder as usual, rinse and allow to dry in the sun.

5 tips from eHow users:

1. Vinegar!
Add 3/4 cup white vinegar to a load of wash. It will remove sour smell and mildew from clothes. Repeat until smell is gone; then you may have to use detergent.

2. Oxi
I've been using Oxi Clean for the past month. I've gotten every stain out. I swear by it and will not use anything else. I've even gotten old tea stains out. I was going to throw away some old baby clothes that were stained, but before I did I thought I would try using Oxi. I have now stored those clothes away for the next baby that comes around.

3. Remove mildew from suede
The dry cleaners said it couldn't be done! I had two suede jackets with 4 years of mildew that no one would touch. I tried a medium concentration of "TKO" orange concentrate and sprayed it right on the jackets one area at a time, sponging as I went. The solution does not stain, and it smells nice.

4. OXI clean and Tide powder
I found that mixing Oxi clean with just enough Tide powder to make a paste works wonderful!

5. Mildew from fabric
Our boat-cushion covers had quite a bit of mildew on them after a winter on the water. I tried laundry soap and bleach with no luck. TILEX mildew spray for the shower removed all the stains. I had to reapply it in several areas, but the cushions looked like new. I have tried this on several other mildew stains on fabric and it also worked

make a solution of bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar (quite strong) with water - soak clothes in this for a short while (30mins) re-apply direct to any difficult areas - then wash with your normal laundry detergent with some Ace washing solution added - should deal with most if not all of it. May need to repeat this process a couple of times.

ugh, it's difficult ... consider tossing it
could try washing in bleach but your colors will fade
try color-free bleach
wash several times in ERA Max and use Downy to get rid of odor

toss them. you'll never get it out without ruining the clothes anyway.
