good chance if the tranny was working properly when parked there may be a stuck valve in the valve in the valve body. or it may be a dried cracked seal. try a can of trans x it is a decent product

First thing I would do is have the oil filter in transmission changed! If it was pretty "cruddy" inside when it was parked, -time has allowed the stuff to more or less set-up into solid matter. This could restrict the flow of oil enough that it can't pump enough through to provide total pressure needed to hold the hydraulic "activating piston" in that gear(clutch) in place. This is usually indicated by poor operation when cold, - but the longer you drive, the better it becomes, - (hot oil gets thinner, - thin oil goes through a plugged filter better than cold oil, - which is thicker).
Assuming you have checked the transmission oil, -as sitting for long periods - some transmissions leak oil out (very slowly), - over a long period, it may have lost enough that transmission doesn't have enough oil to do the full job! Driving in this condition for very long will make transmission junk!
If changing transmission filter doesn't do it, then I would get a good "transmission conditioner" product and put it in and hope for the best!

Assuming you are referring to a 7.3L NAVISTAR engine equipped E-series Ford bus, it is much more cost effective to have the unit replaced with a rebuilt unit as opposed to attempting a rebuild on the transmission in your vehicle now. By the time you total up the cost of the parts you will need, and the cost of the labour to DIAGNOSE and replace, you will be much farther ahead just replacing it with a rebuilt unit that comes with a warranty.

Most likely the seals dried up and no it will not cure itself. They sell different fluids that say they will help but if the seals go non I have seen work. Just have to pay the price and get it rebuilt.

You need to drain the fluid, change the filter and put new in it. Somehow they get an awful lot of moister in them.
