Should I book through an agency? Which airline is best? Where to go? Where to eat? Anything that you would definitely recommend? Any ideas are welcomed!

Yes, all of the islands are so different. I went to Crete on my honeymoon and it was fantastic. I used to live in Greece and still visit frequently. I like to make most of my plans myself, since some things like schedules with ferrys are subject to change.

Mykanos is a party place, Rhodes is gorgeous and great for shopping, Crete is beautiful.

I recommend flying into Athens, and then staying on night to catch up on sleep, or flying directly to your destination, that day.

Spending a couple (2-3) days in Athens, is highly recommended. You can do this at the begining or end of your trip since that is usually where you are flying in and out of. Taxis are reasonable and the best things to see are the obvious: The parthenon, museums, Olympic stadium. I took bus tours once I arrived, that were arranged throught the hotel, most hotels, will be able to arrange this. If not the airport has several travel agencies that will be happy to help you plan most of your last minute flights, and tour arrangements.

I recommend flying Olympic for inter Greece travel, you can go to thier web site to book ahead.

I would also get some free travel guides on the web sites. I got maps from a local book store or the island(s) I planned to visit.

I hear Santorini and Hios, are also great places to visit with a lot of culure.

Expedia.com was very helpful with the hotels, because you can usually see what the hotel rooms will look like. But if you are trying for low budget, then you might want to be more flexible and look for lodging when you get to the island. If you ask around there are usually homes that rent out separate rooms, and it can be quite an adventure.

WARNING: If you make a trip plan with a local(greek) tour guide, ask for your itenerary to be printed in military time(greeks call this german time system). My freinds and I planned a ferry ride to another island the next day, the girl at the tour center told us it was at 3 in the afternoon. We showed up at the port with all of our luggage, and missed the boat, because it was actually 3 in the morning it left. Be very careful about this. Not everyone is as bad at this, but just to be safe learn military time. Which the germans use, all the time. Ask if it is a trip for 0300 or 1500.

Greece is a beautiful place renting a car or a motor bike is a great suggestion.

It may be a good idea to talk to a greek tour guide in America to get some idea of where you want to go. They can ask you questions like if you like being where the clubs and party is at or if you want to be on a more secluded island, with less tourist. I don't recommend, the secluded(empty) islands, usually that means there is less to see or do there. Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Ahtens, have a lot to see and do, to peak your interest and show you the culture, shopping, etc.

Mykanos is know for being a party place, maybe too much party if you are older, unless you go on off season. If you are gay this is supposidly the place to visit though.

Good luck with your trip check my sites below. And look through some tour books at the library or your local book store. !! I wish I was going !!

I have not been to Greece myself but have been doing some planning and asking around on this topic. Everyone I have spoken to has suggested that you do things independently. Book a return flight to Athens and perhaps a night or 2 in a hotel/hostel on-line. The best way to search for cheap flights and hotels is to go to a comparison website like www.travelsupermarket.com. Once in Athens, you can get a series of different ferry tickets to a number of islands. For example you can get an open return ticket to 2 islands and spend as long as you want at each place. If you don't like an island you can move on and as you go along you will meet people and get recommendations of where to head to next. I have been warned about the locals at each of the ports who try and sell you accommodation and offer to be your guide. Most of them will probably be a lot of help but just be aware so that you do not get ripped off.

I am from Greece. You should not hear these guys who tell you all this stuff about my country. I am not defending my country but look... it is very safer than going somewhere else. Am I wrong? The best airway is Olympic Airways which has daily arrivals but if you still want to travel with something else you can still choose (Delta nad British Airways). I live in Athens but you should visit the land by this time of period. If you want more information you can send me e-mail at jkouvakas@yahoo.gr where I can explain you more.

Step 1
Personally I create my own travel plan but an agency may offer to you more convenient prices.
To my opinion in both cases it is necessary to create your own plan according to your interests. You may utilize the agency simply for fixing tickets and hotel (they obtain better prices rather than an individual)
Step 2
Define which is the period you plan to visit Greece
(automn-winter-spring-summer?)
Greece is a destination that fits to all kinds of preferences. But to visit a small isolated island during December for example it would not be a wise idea. During winter the departures of ships depend of the weather. But to choose a destination like Metsovo, Limni Plastira, Zagorohoria it is an excellent idea.
Step 3
Specify the purpose of your visit. Is it simply to relax and to enjoy a SPA? Is it to visit archeological areas? Is it to visit museums? Is it to taste the local food? Is it to learn local dances? Is it to enjoy agrotourism? This will guide you to choose city and hotel (near to the places you wish to visit or with availability of SPA services or located in a village where you may participate in agricultural works for example www.milia.gr)
Step 4
Choose airlines. It is not clear where you travel from. Olympic Airlines are safe and with good service though sometimes they have delays in their flights. Aegean Airlines are almost always on time and they fly to a number of internal destinations. Depending on where you will come from there are special price offers with several airlines.
Step 5
After it is clear the season, the purpose and of course the period (how many days), then you may schedule a specific plan. Do not hesitate to contact me I will be happy to propose you several solutions.

i went to greece couple years ago. and we had a great time. we were at athens for 1 day to begin with. then we took a tour of the ancient sites, penopeless (wrong spelling, i am sure). it was a four days tour and it covered a lot of things that we want to see. kind of a rush, but no need to worry about transportation. then we went island hoping. we went to naxos, paros and santorini. all 3 islands were very different. it was good to go to different islands and compare them.

personally, i enjoyed santorini the best. the beautiful sun set at aio is unforgetable. we stayed in a cave on the cliff. it has a beautiful view of the caldera. we spent one day just walk around the town of thira, and look for all the blue domes of the church. we took so much pictures!!!!

if you are thinking of going to santorini, watch the movie, "sisterhood of the traveling pants" by Alexis Bledel. a good part of it was shot in santorini. and after seeing that movie, you will want to go to santorini.
