Empathy is often characterized as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or experiencing the outlook or emotions of another being within oneself, a sort of emotional resonance.

In fiction, especially science fiction or fantasy works, it may also refer to (or be associated with) a supernatural ability to read others' emotions through psychic means. An example of this are the Betazoids of Star Trek.

Empathy is somewhat similiar to Sympathy...but not quite. Empathy is when you do feel sorry or bad for another person but you not only just feel bad, you can really put yourself in their shoes and really feel that emotion they are feeling...It's a good and bad thing to have...a little will do, but too much and you can become way too involved with others issues and really affect yourself emotionally.

Empathy (neologism; false friend with the Greek εμπάθεια, prejudice, spite, venom) is one's ability to recognize, perceive and directly experientially feel the emotion of another. As the states of mind, beliefs, and desires of others are intertwined with their emotions, one with empathy for another may often be able to more effectively divine another's modes of thought and mood. Empathy is often characterized as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or experiencing the outlook or emotions of another being within oneself, a sort of emotional resonance.

EMPATHY IS THE MOST ATTRACTIVE QUALITY A HUMAN BEING CAN HAVE.
IT IS THE ABILITY TO SEE FROM ANOTHER PERSON'S PERSPECTIVE AND ACCEPT IT.
EMPATHY DEMONSTRATES GENUINE SINCERITY AND COMAPSSION.
IT ALSO SHOWS RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION.
YOU CAN SEE SOMEONE SHOWING EMPATHY WHEN THEY SAY THINGS LIKE "IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD FEEL HURT BY THAT INSULT" OR "I IMAGINE HOW FRUSTRATING THAT MUST BE FOR YOU TO DEAL WITH".
EMPATHY IS DIFFERENT FROM SYMPATHY, WHICH IS WHEN YOU HAVE COMPASSION FOR SOMEONE'S PAIN.

'Empaty,' re 'empathy'! Did / do you by any chance have a lecturer who is an Irish, by any chance?

I only ask as I had one once, he spoke of 'Empaty.,' Any other reference to this is neither within my memory-banks, nor in any of the dictionaries I've had a look in.

'Empathy' - to relate to the feeling / experience of another and to feel a resonating response to it within the self.

Sash.

Empathy is the ability to try to feel what someone is feeling. Can you imagine what it is to walk in someone's shoes?

If you mean "empathy" it means feeling someone else's pain and feelings exactly as they do. You don't see it, you actually feel it.

I don't know what Empaty is, but empathy is seeing yourself in someone else's shoes and caring about it.

The characteristic of being able to feel and identify with other people's feelings. It is probably closest to the word "sympathize." Sometimes the word is associated with Carl Rogers counseling.

Althouth the synonyms (similar meaning words) are sympathy, compassion and understanding, in my opinion it is only compassion. Compassion is how we feel about about a co-member in our faith and how we encourage him or her to win the everyday battles in day-to-day life. It is a Buddhist concept where it is one of the qualities that the members understand and put into practice thru faith, practice and study.
