It strikes me that "Democracy" was a blip in history. With the corporations taking more and more control, it is only a matter of time before we end up with a kind of capitalist Monarchy.
The people don't seem to want a voice any more, they just want TV shows like American Idol and a figure head to blame.

Democracy hasn't failed. We have. There isn't a system of government anywhere that can stand forever against unrelenting efforts to fundamentally alter it. We, the people, were supposed to be the watchdogs, and we, the people were too busy with other stuff to safeguard our own government. We let it get out of control, and it has been changed so much that we may never get a handle on it again.
Human nature will probably always ensure that governments eventually fail, no matter how well designed they are. If it's a good system, then the governed country becomes prosperous. Its people become self-absorbed, too busy enjoying their prosperity to pay attention to the inevitable power-mongers who seek to change the rules to favor themselves, and seek positions of power in order to make those changes. Once they succeed, it's only a matter of time before the original, perfectly good system of government is damaged beyond repair. Sound familiar?
I give us another 50 years, tops, before we sink or swim for good as a country, but only if the global warming issues don't become critical much sooner.

Oh democracy, this wonderful, comforting dream. Oh how sweet the sound.
Democracy is dead since quite some time now. The elections that are held every two years are not more than a show, a cheap charade for the people to feel like being vied for. No matter who is "elected", and the word as such is already an insult when thinking about the elections taking place in this country, the policies are always geared to the disadvantage of the common man.
Our forefathers had a dream. Our forefathers were radical-liberals in the eyes of the crown of England. We have to thank those liberals that they freed us from the rule of England; but do we? Do we really hold their ideals high and behave like a nation that has a right to call itself "The land of the free"? Shouldn't we rephrase that to: "The land of who the ruling class allows to be free."
Our country has lost it's ways and is (today) only ruled by greed, greed and then some. Do we have compassion for others, or do we sooth our souls by attending fund raising dinners for the hungry in Africa. When thinking about fund raising dinners to fight world hunger i am getting sick to my stomach; what an oxymoron.
Do we have compassion for those who's resources we take in the middle east? There is a reason why we are so hated. There is a reason why Israel is called "our only friend in the middle east". I can remember times before the installation of the state of Israel when we had no enemies in the middle east.

You make some assertions which I find perplexing. While I feel the US has become more liberal than I like to see it, it does not indicate a failure of our gov't system. The fact you can ask this Q is the answer as to what liberty has wrought! Rest assured, our "govt" will not crumble, it might slow, make a mistake here and there, and even appear to be acting outside of our individual likes and dislikes. But it is not going away any time soon. Not as long as truly free thinking ppl exist.

I think your question is worded wrong. It is us (We the People) that have failed Democracy. We can spend a lot of fruitless time assessing blame on certain persons or parties, but the bottom line is that this system was made for a moral people. We are no longer a moral people and the system cannot bear the pressure of corrupt politicians, corrupt lobbyists, cynical demagogues, and an apathetic electorate.
What has liberty wrought? Liberty made us free. Freedom made us prosperous. Prosperity made many of us indolent, spoiled, and ungrateful. That indolence and ungratefulness is what is destroying us.

Well Andrew... I think his question has some merit. People need to wake up and realize what their political game playing is costing this country.
From the inside or outside? there are those on the inside that are helping the outside to get what they want.
With the extreme left who are basically willing to sell out the country as a whole to get their "power" back I say it won't take very long.
I have never seen a group of people so willing to embolden the factions of the world that want to see the United States destroyed as I do with the extreme left of today.
I don't understand it.

Love your avatar. Original. I don't know how much longer it will be before or government crumbles, but it will in my opinion and hopefully not within my lifetime.

I think you are wrong. The fact that you can sit at your computer and type that opinion of yours without fear of being carted off to some gulag is proof that the American experiment is not dead. If you don't like the way things are, get involved and work to change things.
