I think she was 19 approximatley at the time. The Show premiered in 1996 she was born in 1977.

The show premiered March 10, 1997. She turned 20 April 14, 1997. So, about 20. She may have been younger when the first episode was filmed, though, as pilots can be filmed several months in advance.

According to this 2003 interview with Entertainment Weekly, SMG said she was 18 when she started with BtVS.
I suppose that could mean auditioning, or it could mean the start of the rehearsals.
