I can't explain it without a diagram. There is a cheap paperback book, Hoyles' Rules of Games, that is probably available second-hand as well as new. It gives the basic rules, and sometimes strategy tips, for hundreds of games, backgammon among them.
By the way, learn to play with humans as well as with the computer. You can have a lot of fun in a club or pub that includes backgammon. I used to play in tournaments when I lived in San Francisco, and made good friends that way. They are less intense and serious than chess players, but they do get competitive. Backgammon is perhaps my favorite game, with just the right combination of skill and luck.

Backgammon is a classic two-player board game. You and your opponent take turns rolling a pair of dice and moving your sets of 15 pieces according to the dice rolls. If you remove all of your pieces from the board into your tray before your opponent does, you win.
Try not to leave any of the pieces on their own by "covering" them with another piece on top of it.
